By far my favorite "Sherlock Holmes" movies were those with Basil Rathbone playing the lead and Nigel Bruce as the ever-faithful Doctor Watson.

Agreed - for me, whenever I reread the Sherlock Holmes stories, my mental picture of the great detective and his faithful compamion are always Basil and Nigel.
Inspired casting, fantastic acting.
It's tough to pick a favorite, but The Hound of the Baskervilles would probably be it.

Undoubtedly, Rathbone and Bruce were the best in a series---
For a one-time portrayal, I'd have a tie between Nicol Williamson and Robert Duval in The Seven-Per-Cent Solution, and Christopher Plummer and James Mason in Murder by Decree.
