Join a Toastmaster's group. They are wonderful for helping people learn how to speak.

The meetings generally follow a pretty standard format - a few people give scheduled speches, the speeches are critiqued and then questions are asked for impromptu answers.

Toastmasters actually has a cirriculum to follow so that you learn how to give public speeches covering everything to hand gestures to how to use the stage area.

The last two portions are probably the least known about Toastmasters, but they are actually just as important as the public speaking portion. Critiquing is an important part of life - you do it with your children, spouses, employees, etc. Impromptu speaking teaches you techniques to use at social events, interviews, and any where you in the spotlight.

Here's some things you can try:
1. Know the material really well, so you're confident about what you're talking about.

2. Instead of looking people right in the eye, look them in the forehead. They won't realize the difference, and you don't have to look at the responses in their eyes.

3. Try practicing in front of a mirror, or have some friends critique you. You can also video-tape yourself and look it over, then critique yourself.

4. Look at other public speakers, and make note of what you think is good (hand gestures, humor, using note cards, etc.)

Hope this helps. Good luck!!

All it takes is proper preparation. Once you feel confident in what you are saying, the speech will flow out of your mouth. Public speaking isn't easy. And it doesn't necessarily get better with time or practice (George W. Bush!). But those that were considered to be great speakers (Ronald Reagan) knew their script/ material and they knew it well. And they delivered it in a sincere manner. It's all about preparation and image.

No, it is obious you are not very smart, and it takes intelligence to be a good speaker. Okay now I got your attention. That is what it takes to be a good speaker. Get there attention and hold it in the palm of your hand. You do it with funny, amusing and intellectual prose.

Colleges and schools usually offer courses like that for people who live in the area. Or, sometimes in coffeeshops they have listings for classes like that.
