If you really want to challenge your ears and musical sensitivity, I suggest you listen to Frank Zappa, his music ranges from the nicest, to the most bizarre and dense stuff.
But I also suggest you listen to Motorhead, Iron Maiden, and (for some heavy-progressive stuff) some early Rush, like Caress of Steel, or 2112, or Hemispheres

Judas Priest has great slammin sounds in the 70s. Black Sabbath, Ac/DC, Motorhead is furious stuff. Metallica, Megadeth, Anthrax, ALso some punk hardcore bands such as Bad Brains, Black Flag, and a few others.
