Germany allowed itself to get bogged down in a house to house fight that caused horrendous casualties for both sides. The Soviet Union could afford toe losses in manpower more than Germany could. VEentually Germany lost the battle of attrition and simply could not keep replacing its losses. They spent months thinnning ou ttheir lines in other places to throw them into battle in Stalingrad and they paid a price. The Russians pushed the lines back, allowing the Germans in the city to become surrounded and cut off from supplies. The German commander was forced to surrender hundreds of thousands of troops and all of their equipment.

At Stalingrad the Russians completely surrounded and trapped the German 6th Army after which the Germans there eventually surrendered. It was the first time the German's had ever been surrounded and beaten. It was a victory for Stalin. none of your possible answers is correct. Adolf was partly to blame for defeat because he wouldn't allow his soldiers to retreat.

It really wasn't so much what the Germans did do but what they didn't. They didn't establish a proper supply line. When winter set in the Russian mostly just sat around taking pop shots at the Germans and stealing an supplies dropped by planes till the Germans ran out of food and ammo.

In general they waited to long to invade Russia and they weren't ready for winter .Hitler expected his army to defeat Russia as quick as they did France and was to stubborn to believe that his army would fail. By 1940 he was already suffering the side effects of all the drugs that were administered to him for years and wasn't to mentally stable. He invaded Russia on the same day as Napoleon did because Hitler thought of him as a master military genius. Napoleon failed because of the early Russian winter also.
