I believe, in the book, one or both of the kids had those guns that will shoot blanks (or possibly even just slingshots?); the kids' father told them never to kill a mockingbird while playing with these toys, because it would be a sin.
You could technically kill a mockingbird many different ways, but I think that is the way the book references.

There is a reference about killing a mockingbird in "To Kill a Mockingbird." The father character (Atticus Fitch) gives his son a bee bee gun as a gift. He tells him that he would prefer that he not kill living things, but he knows that he will do it anyway. BUT, he tells his son, "you should never kill a mockingbird. They don't do any harm to anyone or anything." I think it's also sort of a reference to Boo Radley and that the kids shouldn't torment him. It would be a sin to torment him because he doesn't do any harm to anyone.
