Since Alcoholics Anonymous is a religion, it seems to me it would be a direct violation.

How does a US citizen challenge such a violation, and stop it from happening to other "newcomers"?

The AA vampires are everywhere! Beware!

Ever time the matter has come before a higher court, the final outcome has been that AA is at least "religious in nature" and is therefore a violation of the Establishment Clause.

So far, the courts that have done this are: The Second District Court, The Seventh District Court, The New York Court of Appeals, and the Tennessee Supreme Court. The Supreme Court of the United States has declined to hear appeals of these rulings.

Other courts, recently the Third District, while not having made such rulings, have referred to those rulings when deciding cases.

Anyone challenging whether being mandated to 12step meetings is a violation of their rights is almost assured a victory, if they and their lawyers are willing to invest the time.
