Obviously not a ford F350 and a Geo Metro. But what I mean is like all ford cars that use a 1.6 liter engine or something. Are all those engines basically the same. Or here is another question. If Chevey makes a 2005 car. Is the 2006 model they make the next year use that same engine, or is it totally changed?

Sometimes. Chevy 350 blocks are generally interchangeable, but the emissions must pass according to the year of the vehicle, not the engine. Heads can have different mounting holes for emission and air conditioning accessories depending on the year or manufacturer. (GM is not the only company that makes small blocks)

I believe every year anymore there are improvements. One car we have is a Ford and not even the alternator from a year or so different will fit on it. You need the same year and the same model. I got a Chevy truck and I can take an engine from back in the '50's and use in that.

Generally, the basic block design will be the same. Sometimes they don't make any changes, but when they do the difference will usually be in the switches, sensors, injectors and other various items that may have changed. Sometimes it gets a little deeper such as camshaft valves, or other internal parts that changed.
