What an awesome question! The problem with it is, when does life begin or end? We don't know really. I am a Christian, so I believe in "life after death" which really means there is not death at all. Oh sure, your body dies, but your soul is what's important. In fact, our bodies hold us back from our true potential, so death of the body is really a birth of sorts.

I don't think the human mind is designed to understand time, that's why the Bible cannot be proved (or disproved) by man. God's version of time is something we cannot comprehend in human form. Again, I think when our body dies, we WILL be able to understand the concept of time and how God understands it.

I have often tried to conceptualize eternity...it's impossible, we have no idea what it is. Just try and imagine doing something for ever...for ever, no break, no changes, no sleep. It's insane to think about, but fun.

So the answer is, "I have no idea why, but I don't think we can even begin to understand."

It doesn't have to be that way... It depends on the fractions of time being referenced, in comparison to the life... I am assuming you are referring to the fact that "time" is "continuous", and a single person's life is but a drop in the ocean, in comparison... Keep in mind that time is only a man made construct that we use to help navigate this messed up world. We humans, by nature see parterns, and make associations with it.
Sun goes up, sun goes down, I will call that a "day". Moon goes from not being visible, to a complete circle, I will call that a "month"... Hey, it takes 28 days for the moon to cycle... I will break that up into 4 "weeks". Burr It's getting cold... Why does it seem there is less day time then before? Why is it so hard to find food? I will call this "winter". Ah... The ground has thawed, and everything is warm... I will call this "summer"... I better start preparing for winter... I will start gathering food, I will call this "fall". Hmm. I saw these things when the snow was starting to melt, will call them seeds, and next time when it is starting to melt, maybe I could spead them on the ground and make more food. I will call that time "spring". I think I will refer to the four as "seasons", and the time it takes for the four of them to cycle through as a "year".
*I am unsure of how exactly months, and the days within each month was divised, so I am just giving an simple example of a month.*
The way I see it is that life is short, but at the same time, very long. The same with time... We have broken down time to a very percise fraction. But seeing as how we have "invented" time, we were around before it. So life, (as a whole of humanity) is longer then time. However I could debate that as soon as we created time, it became a constant for the past, present, and future.
I guess I didn't really help, but maybe you learnt something... Oh well just being philosophical.

P.S. Spell check isn't working, I hope I didn't miss-spell many words.

Your question implies that there's some sort of order to the Universe, that there's some sort of pre-ordained "plan".

There's not one scintella of evidence to suggest a preordained plan. The only observable trend or order to the universe is our irreversible road to death and annihilation....as decreed by the all pervasive 2nd Law. ...the road to oblivion.

Because time is all that exists and life is a vague word that we made up to convince ourselves we were important.
