Depends on the journalist. But the major goal they are supposed to be after is to tell what happened in the most objective way possible. To leave out their own feelings and allow the public who reads his/her work to decide what they feel about the subject matter.

My major goal, personally. is to make a difference. With my stories, I want to make people think a bit deeper and maybe even let go of their prejudices. I want people to help other people, because they read my articles. I want to raise issues.

I for instance write a series of stories on refugees in Cape Town, about the bad conditions they have to live in, the unjust administration, etc etc. The result was, in the end, that the waiting lists were shortened and that extra staff was hired at Home Affairs to help more people. The day after, A woman and her husband flew me around the next, After waiting for 6 months for the permit they finally received it. Only because of a few stories against the authorities.
