Some notebooks have a VGA port on the side so that you can connect an external display. Older notebooks simply use a "Fn" key in combination with a function key such as F7 or F8. The corresponding function key normally has icons that reassemble a computer screen. Newer laptops tie in software with this key combination so trying to switch blindly may not be an option.

first off you won't beable to without breaking it if you don't know what your doing. just plug in the external monitor. If it's a dell hit the Fn key and hit F8 I think (It should say CRT/LCD under the F8 in blue) this will make it go to the external monitor. If it's anothe brand look for a function key (usually makred Fn) and look for a blue or other colored key with either two boxes next to each other or CRT/LCD.
