You're not going to die or anything.
Just wash your hands well in warm water.

Depends on the battery, but all are slightly dangerous.

Car batteries use lead and sulfuric acid.
Nickel-cadmium uses cadmium, which is a heavy metal (like lead)
Lithium-Ion uses lithium dioxide, another heavy metal.

Batteries have trace amounts of other hazardous chemicals, like mercury, chromium, acids, alkylides, etc. As long as you don't ingest it, you'll be fine.

Wash your hands, and throw the batteries and the charger away. The batteries are ruined, and most chargers should not have allowed batteries to overcharge.

It is not the mercury that you have to worry about(although I am sure there is NONE) but it is the acid.. So.. you should pour soda(powdered soda) and water on your hands to neutralize the acid from the vehicle battery... The fizzing sound is normal and is part of the charging but YOU, during the recharging, SHOULD NOT get your face down over the battery because that acid has been known to erupt upwards and would get into your eyes to cause permanent blindness.

It is a solution of rather weak sulfuric acid. As it is heavily diluted, it won't hurt you if you get on your hand, provided you wash it off in reasonable amount of time. If you drink it, it is fatal. If you get it on any metal parts, it will leave a mark, and unless you clean it off well, maybe with baking soda (to neurtralize it) and lots of water, it can corrode through after a long period of time.

If you get it on your cloths, wash it off immediately. It can poke a hole on it if you leave it on too long.

No, it's not mercury... it is LEAD that is used in lead-acid batteries (car battery)

It is corrosive and can be explosive while in the battery. Mainly the gases it gives off. It is corrosive though.
