Gibsons are good in any style, like all other decent guitars. I feel they are overpriced, though. Ibanez guitars give you great quality and decent prices, and Carvins are a class better and not horribly expensive, either (if you're someone who can afford a Gibson). Both companies build very versatile guitars, too. What style do you want to play? I play heavier rock, so I want my guitars to have 24 frets and a Floyd Rose tremolo, I even have two seven-string guitars. None of it would be necessary for blues, though none of it would hurt, either. A good guitarist will be good on any guitar; a bad guitarist will suck on any guitar, that's the bottomline. Try Ibanez for starters, and then try different guitars later on. Satriani, Steve Vai, George Bensoin, Pat Metheny... all dropped or ignored Gibsons, all play Ibanez.

P.S.
I've played for almost 30 years - I've sold my Gibsons (nothing there I couldn't get out of Ibanez) but kept my Ibanez and bought a Carvin after all Fenders, Gibsons, PRSs...

Gibson Les Paul's are what I like, but you need to get what YOU like - try them all and see what you think. The Gibson's might have better quality than the Jackson.
