Why is there a donkey and a elephant for our political patys symbols, and why did they choose thoose animals?

Just a rude guess but maybe the donkey symbolizes a jackass and the elephants(like in pink elephants) for getting drunk. So it would have to mean those people are a bunch of jackasses who get drunk a lot so they basically do nothing and get paid for it?

Donkey - stupid but stubborn
Elephant - fat and motionless, never forgetting about the past so never accepting anything progressive. Good for use only as towing animals :-)
