You don't. It's just a tradition, but not everyone does it. I hear some people put up several Christmas trees. It just depends on how you feel about it. I wouldn't worry about the Christmas police coming to get you if you didn't put one up though... I would recommend putting one though, at least for a few weeks in December, if its done with a good attitude, it'll make you smile. And if you have gifts, under a tree would be the perfect place to put them!

Why is there a small evergreen tree in your living room?

This is a German tradition, started as early as 700 A.D. In the 1800s the tradition of a Christmas tree was widespread in Germany, then moved to England and then to America through Pennsylvanian German immigrants.

We don't "have to". It's fun. It's nice to sit around at night with the lights off and the ambience the tree gives off is very romantic. I love my traditional tree. This year it is not elegant it is FUN!

Who says that you have too? It's your choice not to put one up, although it is tradition to do so, a lot of people who now spend their Christmases with their children and grandchildren don't put one up any more.
One of my children lives 2500 miles away and when I go over the holidays for a visit, I still put one up in my house. I have $5000 worth of limited edition ornaments, why would I leave them in a box, it's there for me to enjoy.
