Truth be told, I think it's fear. People can identify too closely with another person, and fear this could be them. But an animal is a defenseless thing and we can afford to feel all-powerful, because we would never be in their situation. In a similar manner, we feel that we would never LET ourselves be in the situation of a poor starving bum, because otherwise we'd have to confront the fact that we're not all-powerful and it could happen to us.

I hate to sound so jaded but humans all to frequently have ulterior motives (haven't we all heard the urban legends about some kindhearted person who took in a homeless person, then benefactor ended up cheated/beaten/dead at the hands of the recipient?) I don't know if these are true or fairy tale but what I do know is animals do not have the decision making ability to make the choices we humans do. Fact is, you CAN pick a stray animal off the street, take it to the vet then home to feed and pamper - if you tried to pick up a stray child off the street to do the same for, you would end up being charged with kidnapping, their drug addicted parents would end up being charged with child endangerment (rightly so), the child would end up in the child 'protection' system until the parents halfassed cleaned their acts up, at which point the child would be returned to the birth parents simply by virtue of the fact they share DNA, until these same worthless parents figure out how they can sue you for the emotional damage you caused their family by stepping up to the plate, because you and I both know they didn't really clean up their act, they're just looking for someone besides themselves to pay for thier habits. Meanwhile, the kid is stuck in the middle with no say in the matter. An oversimplification to be sure but you get the picture... It's just plain old not safe to try and help many people.

I understand how you feel and have often questioned this myself.
When I'm on the street I will often give money to people who are begging. I am fortunate to have a very good job and I understand that many people out there are not so fortunate and feel desperate enough to have to do this. I am only thankful that I am not in that situation.
However, when I do this I often get berated by people I am with that I shouldn't "encourage" begging. They feel that actually "choose" this lifestyle! That line of reasoning simply boggles my mind. I do not believe anyone would consciously choose to beg on the street if there was any other alternative. Yes, their choices in life might have led to their circumstances, such as drug use, but no one starts out thinking, "Gee, I really hope to end up being a beggar when I grow up!"
We need to have as much compassion for our fellow human beings as we have for abused animals. I hate hearing about animal abuse as much as the next person, but I don't feel that animal life is more valuable than human life.

Animals can kill a man or woman yet they could't homicide them. An animal won't be able to dedicate an evil deed considering all it does is attempt to live on. If an animal kills its for nutrition or to guard itself. or maybe then an animal may study to worry people and under no circumstances kill or damage them. U won't be able to say any of issues about people. people homicide, rape, beat, strangle, decrease, and so on different people. people have completely diverse motives which come from evil, psycho, enraged options now to not live on. and u are incorrect, at the same time as an animal kills a human or hurts them for instance a canines its continually euthanized. human beings dont basically say 'oh undesirable pup' they kill that animal. not all people are punished to the finished quantity of the regulation both they get away with it with the help of their attorneys. Have u ever watched Animal Planet? have u ever seen how cruel and terrible people are to animals? have u ever seen how fowl, pigs, cows and so on are dealt with basically so that you may devour them? all those issues at the on the spot are not good. not some thing, no residing element might want to wade through basically so that you may devour. devour even if u choose yet take care of it humanenly. also endangered species are by way of human movements, seem on the buffalo. almost thoroughly extinct by way of people searching. now seem at different animals like frogs. some species of frogs are death in a dramatic way by way of global warming. its people fault.....this international is cruel and at circumstances terrible some human beings do not care about ravenous little ones a lot less about a canines or cat soo what r u speaking about.

I know its a terrible thing.. humans being jaded.. But less face facts most of us are nicer to animals.. Being that animals love and are happy regardless if we feel like playing or have food in our hands.. A lot of people only look at what they can take, or how they can use another person.. I find myself... not being the same as when I was 20.. The struggle of life and surviving changes most.. I honestly enjoy pets and animals company better than most people I meet.. I still believe in defending the weak..

i shake my head at the stupidity of that one ladies answer. people like you are why the world is the way it is.some people can not decide that they want to be less fortunate or live on the streets it is what is given to them. as for the children on the street i have also seen and helped these children out. they are innocent and trust us and we need to help them if we are going to make this world a better place. to that lady i know pets are not all you say they are when my great aunt died she was not found in her house for a few weeks in this time her cats would eat her dead body to survive it looks like we are not much different. i also agree with this guy that humans are more value able than animals. i don't abuse animals or agree with it but if a dog bites me it is going to get a kicked. all i have to say is good on you for asking that question i also have wondered the same thing

I don't think may people would ignore children if they encountered them.
In my neighborhood there is a Salvation Army shelter and there are a lot of stray animals. My neighborhood is "in transition", a lot of people live on the edge. But I also think people cause their own problems. The people at the shelter are 99% white men with drug and booze problems. I am not giving them money for booze. People live transient lifestyles and they get animals and then dump them in my neigbhorhood. If I get a stray in my yard I trap it and get it neutered and get it basic shots. It is not the animals fault it doesn't have a home and has become a "nuisance" animal. It can live in my yard, I don't care.
People, though, have choices. The ones in my neighborhood make very poor choices. They can't pay rent but they buy fancy rims for their car, for instance. I have no sympathy for that kind of stupidity.

Well, right there, you just inserted your own opinion. YOU believe that a human life is greater than an animal's. I do not believe so. In fact, I think we're all animals, and we're all on a level playing field. If we did not have weapons, animals would kick our a*ses. *shrugs* And now, you're just trying to get people to donate money to help out people who have given up on helping themselves. Paris Hilton can feed her dog, put her dog in little bows and ribbons, and totally spoil that dog if she so wants to. The dog is hers, and she can do what she wants with Tinkerbell (I think that's the name...). She doesn't have to, but she wants to just like how she does NOT HAVE TO HELP OTHERS OUT if she doesn't want to. That's just how it is.
If you had a kid, wouldn't you provide for the kid before you provide for a total stranger...? Common sense. The fact that you believe that animals are somehow lower than us might make my statement a bit difficult to digest, but that's really how it is in this world. Deal with it or become a humanitarian or something. Stop bitching on the Internet.
