well, there are lots of ways. If you live in the 1600s or so, you have a rope and a clock. The rope has knots in it. You throw one end overboard and count how many knots slide through your fingers each minute. That is your speed in knots! The knots are spaced so that, for example, if you are sailing along at 6 knots, 6 segments of rope will go through your fingers each minute.

Today, you can use a GPS, and set it to "knots" instead of "miles per hour".
You could also convert from miles per hour to knots, which is nautical miles per hour. A nautical mile is 6076.1 feet, and a "statute" or regular mile is 5280 feet. So your speed in knots is 5280/6076.1 as fast as your speed in miles per hour.
