On a controvesial topic ( gay rights, abortion, Amerucanization). I have to use the book as a reference. I'm in 12th grade English. For example My Sister's Keeper was on stem cell research, but it was still a fictional book. We already read that book in English though. Thanks!

How about : Faludi, Susan. Backlash: The Undeclared War Against American Women. 1991.
This unflinching analysis examines the current status of American women.

Kotlowitz, Alex. The Other Side of the River: A Story of Two Towns, a Death, and America's Dilemma. 1998.
Geographically, only a river separates two closely neighboring towns, but the murder mystery surrounding the death of a young black man exposes a deeply rooted racial divide.

If you want to talk about abortions why not go into a very controversial subject pro-choice and pro-life? There has been a lot written about it and you will have more than enough references. Someone wrote an essay on it:

If you type into Google pro-choice vs pro-life you will have more than enough references including (I guess) books.

You want controversy? Do your report on the book "Treason" by Ann Coulter..she has a whole chapter on how correct Joseph McCarthy was. I guarantee that your teacher will get REALLY offended, especially if your report agrees with her
