Go with the simple stuff.
No plug it in or battery operated toys. Things that are simple..like a 1 yr. old is :-)
Stuffed animals, stacking cups, ride on toys, play food, building blocks, etc.

My son will be 15 months on the 22nd. He doesn't get the whole "Christmas" thing yet, so I figure this is my last year before I really have to go all out. He has more than any child could need, so my husband and I are getting a gift that will be fun for the whole family, a new child bike seat. As far as opening gifts on Christmas morning, we will probably wrap a few small items and have lots of wrapping paper for him to play with, that is what will make for great pictures anyways (don't forget the cute Christmas pajamas!) Good luck and happy holidays!

My son is also 1. He absolutely adores his Playskool Busy Ball Popper. It is always a big hit when I have playgroups come over too. Every baby seems to love it. As other people have said, books are also great. I'd suggest getting several at Half Price Books or other used book store because babies can destroy even the toughest of board books. I bought a lot for my son. His other fav thing to play with is a plastic mixing bowl set (real ones from housewares) I got at Walmart. He loves putting things in and taking them out of each of the bowls.

Just a little something that he/she can unwrap. Trust me the wrapping paper will have much more of an impact then the gift. He/she is too young to remember anything about Christmas this year. Next year will be much more fun for you.

Books are great gifts that last forever. I am 25 and still have my childhood books. I am in the process of giving them to my baby now. We only buy books for our nieces and nephews because toys are usually broken and lost after a week, especially at one year. Books are a great gift for ANY age!

Keep it simple. The excitement is catching, even for one year olds. It can be too much. >

Soft blocks, I love the little blocks they have with things in them. I think it is Fischer Price. My grandkids loved them when they were 1 and still play with them. And yes he will notice the toys etc. Even at one they know when something is for them!
