This happens after about an hour long drive with intermitent stops inside town and more severe when you drive with the air conditioner on. When you re-engage the Drive gear the car makes no move until you rev the engine to full depression of the accelaration pedal

Chances are that the transmission is acting up.
Don't tell us what year or how many miles.It could be that it is due for service. Recommend a transmission shop or the dealer.

Also, It could be the engine getting too hot with no air going thru the radiator, and transmission cooler while you're not moving.
Make sure the electric engine cooling fans are working. (both of them)
