You find a large bag of cash left behind by an armored car truck on a parking lot. It's nighttime, NO witnesses. You could keep the money and NEVER get caught, as long as you stay quiet. Do you keep it? Or do you return it? Remember, the bills are NOT marked, Untraceable. Let's say there is $ 96,000.00 and some change. Very few checks. Now, be honest and tell me.......

Can anyone really answer this question unless they've been in that situation. I think part of me would want to take the money and run while another part of me would be too anxious to do so. That nervous side of me would want to run the money straight to my car where I would phone 911 to come pick it up. I'm not sure exactly what I'd do.

Ok, first thing. Are there cameras anywhere? Most likely yes in a parking garage.

What were you doing in the building. Did you have an appointment? Did you sign in anywhere?

If caught, it will be considered stealing? I might take the bag with me. Returning it to the owner. Check the bills. Are they new? In order? Is anybody following me now? Radio on. Listen for anything about the money. Local talk radio is best bet.

Now, if I return the money to the owner. Can I get by without telling my wife about this. Would she believe gambling winnings. It is football season. I don't know. That would be a stretch.

I could sit on the money for a couple years. Not spending, not displaying and never telling ANYONE about it.

I don't know exactly what I would do. I am pretty sure the cameras and my prior presence in the building would keep me from being able to get away with it.

It is theft. You know who's it is, who accidently left it, the checks are not made out to you, possession with intent to keep is theft. If you did not immediately report it to the police on the spot, but took it home, it is intent to keep, and is a crime. Come on, don't you think they will investigate, and once you've told all your honest friends they are going to need a big cut to keep their mouth shut, or maybe just report you for being a theft, then where are you? in jail. On the other hand, you might get a reward for turning it in, instead of jail time.

I would return it to the Police without a thought.
For one it would be considered stealing.
Second, you say I could keep it and NEVER get caught as long as I stay quiet. My problem with that is my conscious would NEVER stay quiet, it would be constantly yelling at me.
And third even if no one saw me take it, I would know.

I don't stay honest because I won't get caught, but because I believe in the principle of being honest. I want others to be honest with me, and I hope I always am honest with them.

I'd take the bag into the bank/store or whatever, and tell them the truck left it outside.
