I'm currently in Year 12, studying English, History, Geography and French, and I'd like to study Law, Politics or History at Oxford. What advice would you give me when applying etc?? Any advice welcome!!

Thank You!!

The question is a bit too general, but basically, if you are a bright student, getting into Oxford isn't as nerve-breaking as most people think. It has a very "human" attitude towards selection - they look at the qualities of every individual sympathetically in the old fashioned way (rather than through some mechanical process like a string of senseless examinations).

By the way, I am not involved with Oxford in any way, neither am a student nor a staff. But my impression is that they are quite a friendly bunch of folks - contrary to popular belief.

So make your application smart-looking. I think they have a policy of interviewing every undergraduate candidate that applies there! At least it used to be like that till recently. When called for an interview, present yourself as a down-to-earth, yet intelligent, person. Get the body language right too.

Some people waste too much money on buying impressive clothes just for the interview at Oxford/Cambridge. Believe me, that's a waste of money. They are more interested in knowing how you think, rather than how you look.

Your school may have special help for you - ask them. For me, my school provided mock interviews (although didn't do much good as i spacked up my real interview!). I would advise you to emphasise your non-academic activities - give examples of how you are such a well-rounded individual (as i'm sure you are!), like volunteering, d of e, sports activities.

In the interview, try not to be thrown by questions about something you don't know about. I was asked to analyse a poem, although i hadn't studied poetry since gcse. Looking back, it wasn't the fact i couldn't do it that was the problem for them but it was that i panicked - they don't expect you to know everything! Oh, and don't waste too much time deciding what college to apply for - all of them are good so doesn't matter too much!

I would think grades and some kind of selection process. Good luck with year 12 and getting in to Oxford.

get good grades coz the competition is very tough ( Oxford is the second top University in the world after Harvard) ...also, extra curriculum activities cant hurt! and of course: ask ur parents to start saving! Good luck

i do not imagine there is any distinction between both. i imagine it only potential a similar ingredient. In Oxford there is also a Oxford Brooks college yet it truly is yet another college.
