If you are connecting to the internet through a telephone line then it is called a "Modem".
This modem is of two types - Internal and external

Internal - This is fitted inside your Computer's CPU or the cabinet in laymans terms

External - This is visible outside as a small box.

If you are connecting the internet through a local internet provider then that is a different story.

Specify which type of connection do you want to use and we can answer more clearly.

if you have broadband the item you connect to is call the nic card stands for network interface card, if your using dial-up then you connect to the modem which stands for modulate demodulate it just converts the analog signal to a digital signal. the broadband connection on the nic card is going to be bigger then the connection on modem due to the bandwidth. you will need an Ethernet cable for your broadband connection cat5 or cat5e and a regular phone cord for the modem.
