This is probably due to a combination of factors- dietary, habitat, etc. Turtles need a little more care than some people might suggest. For example, they need space, warmth, sunlight, cleanliness and a good, varied diet.

Space: Aim for at least 10 gallons of swimming space per inch of turtle. Smaller tanks lead to a variety of problems.

Warmth: Heat the water to 75-80F and the basking sites to 90F.

Sunlight: Turtles need UV-B rays and sunlight-like lighting for good health. Reptile bulbs are usually the easiest option.

Cleanliness: Filter water about 2-3 times more than you would for a fishtank.

Good, varied diet: Try about 25-50% good pellets, and the rest live or frozen/thawed 'fish food' like small fish, bugs, worms, shrimp, beefheart, etc.
