10-Pinmonkey - Self Titled: This fine album was released in the later stages of 2002 but firmly stands out as the best release by a new group. The album features inventive covers of past pop hits like FLY by Sugar Ray and I Drove All Night by Cyndi Lauper. What is strange is that Pinmonkey's lead instrument is typically a Dobro or slide guitar which when compounded with bluegrass-like harmonic vocals, the band simply sounds like no one else.

9-Rascal Flatts-Melt: The sophomore album by this harmonic trio is simply stunning. The CD debuted at number one, the first single, These Days became a multi-week number one and the whole album was a stunning blend of country music meets pop. What this album also disproved was the notion that Rascal Flatts was merely a "country boy band" for they play their own instruments in addition to singing and writing songs (such as the stunner "Shine On").

8-Darryl Worley-I Miss My Friend: Another sophomore release that debuted in the Number One position, "I Miss My Friend" saw the title track become Darryl Worley's first Top Ten and Number One hit. From the swampy Tennessee River Run to the somber POW 369 Darryl Worley proves that he's another steady country music writer and performer who makes not just singles but consistent albums.

7-Keith Urban-Golden Road: another CD that charted well, Golden Road showcases a much more confident vocalist and writer than we heard on Keith's self titled debut release. The first single Somebody Like You was the first indication of a CD that oozes with future hits and charming songs. The CD also tackles subjects like religion and addiction.

6-Stong Enough-Travis Tritt: Travis Tritt continues his resurgence with a fine collection of songs that talk about the state of country living Country Ain't Country, the state of love(Strong Enough To Be Your Man), and how people were ready to cast him off as a "has been" (You Can't Count’s Me Out Yet).

5-Dixie Chicks-Home: The album that they recorded with Vocalist Natalie's father (Lloyd Maines) while the band was suing their label for a better contract (they settled), "Home" was an unapologetic (all acoustic) take on country music and for once "real" country music was brought to the masses instead of pop influenced country crossing over to pop.

4-Joe Nichols-Man With A Memory: His major label debut, and first record since 1996, has it all: ballads, swing, traditional honky tonk and even a modern sounding ballad (the title track). Throughout all of the strong songs here is a confident vocal style that oozes charisma and charm that is sure to propel songs like Brokenheartsville to the top of the charts like The Impossible was. The witty and fun Life Don't Have To Mean Nothin' At All also could be heading that way in 2003.

3-Tie-Kenney Chesney-No Shoes, No Shirt, No Problem and Anthony Smith-If That Ain't Country: One CD is by a slow building superstar while another is the debut album from a confident vocalist whom has the ability to be a star. Chesney knows how to pick hit songs while Smith knows how to write 'em (George Strait's "Run", Trace Adkins' "I'm Tryin'" and "Chrome" among others).

Both artists are distinctive vocalists whose albums are delightful from start to finish. Chesney's CD showcases a man who is confident in his abilities and isn't afraid to release singles that might not do well on the charts (as evidenced by his choice of A Lot Of Things Different as a single). Smith showcases a growling style that comes through on such gems as If That Ain't Country and Up To The Depth.

2-Deryl Dodd-Pearl Snaps: Not a commercial success and no hit singles from it but Deryl Dodd's album features his previous hit songs A Bitter End, That's How I Got To Memphis along with new honky tonkers She'll Have You Back sweet ballads Good Things Happen choice cover songs like Sundown and acoustic tracks like Where The River Flows. The man deserves to be a star and perhaps his new label will help him become one.

And the Number One Album of the year is: Alan Jackson's Drive album. It all started in November of 2001 when Alan recorded and released what everyone says was the best 9/11/01-themed song with Where Were You (When The World Stopped Turning). The second single Drive (For Daddy Gene) also became a huge hit but what makes the album truly remarkable is it's consistency from the opening track to the closing live version of "Where Were You."
