My wife and I just had a baby. A friend suggested a product called Babysense that detects the movements of the baby while it sleeps. If it stops moving (breathing) the monitor will sound and alert the parents. Is this a worthwhile device? Should I buy one?

Might as well, what's to lose?

Congratulations on your new bundle of joy! I think if this monitor helps your wife and yourself feel more assured then you should use it. Remember that these man made devices are subject to error and could cause panic when not needed. I would look the monitor up on line and see if there has been any complaints regarding how well the item functions. They also sell one that is fairly cheap that has a video monitor so you can see the baby at all times. I just looked at it at Target. Either way good luck & congrats!

I personally would advise against getting a sleep sensor. As a first time parent, you are already freaked out about every little thing and adding a sensor, that is not an exact science, will only add to your overload! You could get one of those monitors that lets you hear the baby, but you may end up reacting to to every little whimper, cry and movement while thinking, "Is she awake? Should I go in?" I personally got rid of the monitor when I realized that I wasn't sleeping because I was hearing EVERYTHING and my son did just fine without it. I know we are all freaked out about SIDS, but if you do all the things you're suppose to(tight sheets, fitted clothes, back sleeping), then you should rest easy. But, ultimately, you do what your instinct is telling you and you won't make the wrong choice. Good luck!

Speaking as a parent who has lost a baby to SIDS do not buy one if this is the reason why you are thinking about it. With my subsequent daugther after the one I lost my doctor ordered me a monitor to use and I stopped using after about three months because if a baby stops breathing and it is SIDS related a monitor will tell you the baby has stopped breathing, but there is nothing you can do about it. A baby that stops breathing because of SIDS cannot be rescusitated they are already gone. If a baby stops breathing and can be rescusitated then it was apnea related not SIDS. There is no such thing as a baby almost dying of SIDS either if it is SIDS the baby is already gone. When my daughter died my husband was sitting right beside her and when she stopped breathing her binki fell out. He picked it up to put it back in her mouth and noticed right away she was not breathing. He got me and I started CPR right away. The EMS got there pretty quick also, but it was SIDS so it didn't matter how soon after she stopped breathing we got to her it was too late. After three months of hooking my daughter up every time she slept and dealing with alarms because she would pull off the electrodes I decided to take her off and let my baby live without wires always being attached to her especially since the only thing I could do if it went off due to SIDS is watch her die anyways. If you are interested in a monitor because of apnea reasons then yes do it, as a matter of fact if your child has apnea your doctor can prescrib you an apnea monitor from somewhere like Advanced Health Care or somewhere like that. I noticed someone told you that if you follow all the things you are supposed to to avoid SIDS you will be fine, no not necessarily. We did everything right and it still happened to our daughter.

I think we need to be a bit more relaxed about babies. No one wants to lose a child ever, but for Gods sake if we are going to worry constantly we will become paranoid. Then there is no point in having children. You pay attention to your baby, when you get tired of waking up and want to sleep all night, you move them from your room to their own room. Then you actually get four hours of sleep before the little one cries loud enough to wake you up for a feeding. When you put them to sleep the best thing you can do with newborn is to wrap them tight, lay them on their side, turn the lights off and close the door. What you should not do is be quiet. Go ahead and vaccuum, that baby needs to learn how to function in the real world not an ideal one suited to him. I had a lot of friends who did not rest until their babies were damn near toddlers because they were paranoid and catered to them. They had to put them in the car to get them to fall asleep, the child was never allowed to cry so when he finally had to for more than a few minutes he would vomit, and god forbid if the phone rang when he was asleep......I could go on if you like.

Talk to your parents and grandparents about how they raised their babies.......they didn't have movement monitors. They had instinct!

speaking as someone who bought the angelcare SIDS monitor I should not have bought it. I was/am paranoid about SIDS but it was a waste of money as if she moved off the sensor it would send a shrill alarm waking her/me. I also bought the safety first video monitor and love it. So learn from me at least and skip the movement monitor, a regular monitor will be just fine!!! Congrats on the new baby.

Just think about it this way, how much at night do you move while you are sleeping, Ibet your answer is a lot, well the same is true for your baby. Babies, although they have to sleep on their backs moves around a lot an just think with every movement the alarm would go off. It is bad enough you will have to wake up every 2 hours to feed your baby, but imagine waking up at the babies evry move

If you already have a monitor I would say no. We registered for a movement sensor monitor and I drove myself nuts with it. I was worried that it wouldn't work. Then if he wiggled off the sensor area that alarm would scare the crap out of us. We ended up turning the movement option off for our own sanity.

if you're baby is sickly and weak, then yes. if your baby is functioning properly and is healthy, no. the last thing you want is to become one of those overprotective and overbearing parents that smother their kid with "love." my cousin whom is 8 years old has parents like that and she 1) knows little about the world 2) has very few experiences 3) ceases to have much of a social life 4) cannot "grow"

i understand if you are concerned with your baby, but if you are worried about the welfare of your child, put his crib next to your bed or in the same room as yours until he/she is old enough (around 3 years old)

It became uncomfortable whilst they have been attaching it, (which became for sure executed vaginally) and it left slightly scratch on my daughters head. The wires hang from you, and fasten to a device. they are very long so as that they shouldn't reason lots hardship for you. in case you would be able to desire to pee, they are in a position to be disconnected from the device. they are used to maintain song of the babies coronary heart fee and are extra precise than the exterior video reveal gadgets. (its no longer ordinary to apply them whilst there are 2 coronary heart costs to be hectic approximately). It became in simple terms a tiny area of the start of my daughter, and could convey you extra reward than drawbacks. So dont hardship approximately it!! terrific of luck! Its particularly no longer something to be apprehensive approximately. while you're worried appropriate to the soreness, you are able to ask for them to be linked when you have had your epidural. (in case you intend on one that is)
