either a bad battery or alternator . Check the battery first, it's cheaper to replace

When you say the car shuts off, do you mean the engine runs slower then stalls when the headlamps are turned on, if so, this is caused by the the alternator charging the battery.to replace the current being drawn off by the headlamps. If this is the case you really have two problems, you need to understand that when an alternator is charging at it's maximum there is a considerable load applied to the engine and it can easily stall the engine the manufactures realising this built into the ecu [computer] a load sensing circuit which would speed up the engine and so overcome this problem. now this could be not working or, what is more likely is that your engine is in a poor state of tune and is not responding to the command. the second point is that your battery is probably a bit tired and is requiring a much higher input and so working the alternator harder for longer. The one positive you can take from this is that there is nothing wrong with your alternator
