World leaders will never learn. As Midnight Oil sung in "Short Memory", "If you read the history books you'll see the same things happen again and again."
I know some Vietnam Veterans conscripted to fight against their will in a war for America... they have never forgotten and never will....

Actually we DID learn a few lessons... in 1990 President G.H.W. Bush organized a coalition to deal with the invasion of Kuwait using the STATE Department for THEIR job... and then put the prosecution of that war into the hands of the Department of DEFENSE... letting the Generals make the plan following the goals and guidelines set down by the UN and the President.
The Persian Gulf War WORKED... it was the post-war that was screwed by a soft UN and new President.
That war was led by those officers (who had been screwed by President's Kennedy and Johnson) knowing and demanding that politicians should not run wars from Washington.
Sadly... there are indications that Sec. Rumsfeld didn't quite remember the lesson, or believed his own propaganda.
The truth is this war is screwed up for a number of reasons:
1) Americas love/need for immediate gratification.
2) 24/7 news coverage and it's need for the "spectacular" or "gruesome" to survive (make money).
3) No plan to involve the American PEOPLE in the war... a sense of WE'RE serving too.
4) Failure to ensure Syria, Iran, and Saudi Arabia weren't allowing insurgents/ terrorists and weapons to enter Iraq.
5) Disbanding the Iraqi Army rather that holding it and reconstructing it in place and rapidly.
6) Not rounding up and shooting anti-war protestors (just kidding).

It will take a long, long time because we're apparently going to be in Iraq for a long, long time. Latest estimates are we could be there until at least 2012. How many more Americans will die in that time due to the stupidity and arrogance of George W. Bush? This will be his legacy.

It doesn't bother you that Iraq supports and houses the terrorists that attacked us on 9/11? In VietNam we had no reason to attack them, they didn't give up any problems but we were attacked by the extremists within Iraq. I don't understand how you think. Besides we will be at war again, it's going to happen, lets just hope it won't be to defend our nation again.

you forgot the wrong lesson.
The General of the North Vietnam Army (their LEADER) said (years after the end of the war) that they were ready to surrender years before the end of the war, and they were 'beaten'. The only reason they kept fighting was because they were winning over in America through all the protesters.
WHEN WILL YOU LIBERALS REALIZE YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE DEATHS OF OUR TROOPS?
