Not knowing how many miles is on it, it could be what they call piston slap. It also could be a rod bearing. You say its not a lifter. Do you have mechanical, or hydraulic? Hydraulic will fill with fluid, but if it is in a collapsed stage, you can get that knock sound. Also, it may bend a push rod. If mechanical, its just a solid lifter, and they are noisy anyway. The best way, and I know its a pain, is to pull the pan, and see if you have alot of metal shavings in the oil. If so, check each rod and main bearing that attaches to the crank shaft. You may find that one is sloppy when you push it from side to side. Get it replaced, before you shell out the whole engine. If it is any of the main or rod bearings, the crank will have to be turned. Good luck.
