I never fit in any clique, but my school was filled with every clique imaginable.
I had a group of close friends who were all different, i had some art friends, some in the glbt group, some in the punks, some goths, emos, blah blah, jocks, but mostly i just hung out with my best friend. I never liked cliques.
I think that everyone would benefit if they had friends with members of every clique. That way they learn to accept everyone for who they are.

I belonged to the choir clique, although I wasn't in any of the singing groups. They were the very smart kids and very high achievers, and I wasn't a high achiever. I felt very accepted by them, and they were really terrific towards me. I wanted to be a cheerleader, but I'm glad I didn't make it, as I ended up going to college early instead, which was good for me. The choir kids were tremendously supportive, and I admired them a great deal, and I did end up in choir in college, and I find that I use singing a great deal, like singing children to sleep. All in all, it turned out very well, although a tiny part of me still resents that I didn't make cheerleader!

I transferee high schools in 11th grade. In my first school, I was in with the Band kids and the Speech/Forensics crowds.
When I moved, my graduating class was twice the size of my entire school. The Speech team had 7 kids on it (my smaller school had kids fighting for the 40 available spots...they've been conference champs for like 30 years now...it was 7 or 8 when I was there) and the band director didn't want me in his top band even though I was playing in the area's Youth Symphony. I kind-of had my own group of misfits in my new school, because I never really found a niche.

I never liked liked exclusivity of any kind, and I never liked to become a part of such groups. Somehow, though, I managed to hang out with people who had similar backgrounds as I did. I had the same main friends (two brothers) from grade 7 to grade 12, and they were guys who grew up on a farm, like I did. It wasn't until long after I finished school that I discovered that their older brother was a good friend of my older brother.

I had friends in lots of different groups. From the preps to the goth kids. I always thought that the skaters were the absolute coolest though. But I was so shy that I never made friends with any of them.

I was part of the great nothingness. It is kind of like the blood stream.....there are red cells, white cells, and platelets.....and then there is the plasma that they are in yet not really a part of. I was part of the plasma...just there to carry the others around but no real identity of my own. You learn to live with it.

I was a goth kid. I was happy with that, I liked being different and I liked the attention it got me.
