Enough with the Oxygen Sensor could be the problem every time someone has a question about a check engine light. Out of the 1,700 possible codes you can count the number related to failed O2 sensors on one hand with digits to spare.
If your just guessing because all you know is that a check engine light COULD be caused by an O2 sensor then shut the heck up. Your not helping.
My apologies for being so blunt.

You don't tell us what kind of car, or what year, but if it is 1996 or newer, the light will only come on for an emissions related fault or failure.
In the case of the thermostat, it is probably more a code of too cold for too long. This indicates that there may be a stuck thermostat. If it is stuck open, the computer isn't getting the correct data to properly control fuel delivery. It will consider the engine cold enough to need more fuel (remember chokes?).
This will cause emissions to rise above maximum allowable standards for your car, as well as cause fuel economy to suffer.
Good Luck and Merry Christmas

Alot of times that check engine light will come on when the oxygen sensor is bad. You will notice that your miles per gallon will go down some. A guy at work has had his on at 80,000 miles, and he has over 200000 on his truck now.
