Right now, hooked up to my boyfriend's mom's computer is a ZyXEL DSL box, and our ISP (?!?) is Peoplestel. Please help because I have no idea even where to start with wireless internet!!

No, not unless you travel around allot with your laptop, especially if you are going to college and want to access stuff in the lunch room. If not, it's not a must have to die for thing. Wireless access is fine if you want to wander around the house and surf the net, but someone else can hopefully fill you in on what else is needed, like a router that supports wireless. Enjoy the computer, Merry Christmas

The laptop comes with wireless capability, so that's good. Without a model number of the ZyXEL DSL box (modem) we can't tell if it too has wireless capabilities.

First check for that. If the modem does already have wireless capabilities, then all you need to do is turn that on and set it up. Then configure the laptop wireless to connect to it. All of this should be in the manual for the modem.

If the modem is not a wireless modem, then you'll need to get a wireless access point, aka Wireless Router. This hooks up between the ZyXEL modem and you boyfriend's mom's computer. Again, that needs to be set up according to the manual and the laptop needs to also be set up. It's fairly simple and you can pick up a router for under $50.

Hi,

A basic wireless network consists of a central networking device, usually a router, with computers connecting to the router. The computers can connect wireless to the router through a wireless network card or adapter. Computers that will be placed near the router can be connected through an Ethernet networking cable as most routers feature a built-in networking switch and can simultaneously support wired connections as well as wireless connections.
Each computer wishing to connect to the wireless network will need to have wireless capabilities, either from a separate network card or from a built-in module on the computer.

One more issue is that how to select features matching your existing network (or features of the one you're planning). For example:

a/ Whether your network is wired or includes wireless.
b/ Which wireless standard your network uses. (802.11g, 802.11b, RangeMax, etc.)
c/ How much security you want.
d/ How fast you need your network. New, expensive routers will tend to be faster.
e/If you want to access your business from home, then your IT department may require your router to include the VPN feature (not "VPN passthrough").

So just buy networking products that will be great for your home network.

Hope this information will be helpful to you...

Run down to Walmart and pickup a Linksys WIFI router. Reason I say Walmart is they will take back anything if it does not work. $50+tax
