Alchemy is more religion than science. The old texts are full of symbols and metaphorical stories. The alchemists never *actually* turned lead into gold. The goal of the alchemists work was to take the spirit that is encased in matter (symbolized by lead) and free it from the matter (make it spiritually pure - symbolized by gold). Other symbols for this are the phoenix, which rises from the ashes, and Christ, who rises from the dead. Hermes Trismegistus ("thrice greatest hermes," also called Mercury) is another important alchemical symbol, because in mythology, Hermes is a messenger god who travels from the underworld (the low, debased spirit) all the way to the heavens (the pure, free spirit). This is what the alchemists sought to do.

There is a famous, very short, alchemical text, called The Emerald Tablet of Hermes Trismegistus, and it contains the famous saying in Hermeticism, which the Alchemists used as well: "As above, so below." It means that everything contains divine spirit, and the goal of alchemy is to free that spirit from matter. That text would be a good place to start.

There are a few remaining Alchemists in this big world of ours. There are a number in New Zealand, and various others scattered about Europe and the United States. Lately, several good books on the subject have been published. The best, in my opinion is "Real Alchemy: A Primer of Practical Alchemy", by Robert Allen Bartlett. (It is available now on amazon.com.) I would advise reading the book and others listed below. Then, attempt to contact a real alchemy teacher and apprentice under him/her. The subject is very broad, very complex and difficult to understand. People spend years and years, and even decades investigating the meaning of Alchemy.

alchemy is almost a dead art that has evolved into chemistry. the old texts are full of misdirection and falsehoods partially because they didn't want people to be able to copy them and partially because transmuation violates a few laws of physics. alchemy.com is a good place to read up on it though.

What precisely do you want aid w/? My inspiration, uncover a pal that is fluent and feature conversations with them. Get a workbook/ textbook. Get the Rosetta Stone(a laptop software), or Pimsleur(a CD language software). Good good fortune.
