I used to live across the river from New Orleans, on the westbank. I dont live there anymore since the hurricane. I just want to know how the rest of the country/world feels about what happened there. Please answer with the state or country you live in. The hurricane was the natural disaster but the leeves breaking and those people being stranded there without even water or food being sent for 4 days is a government disaster.

I dont see why the military wasnt sent in sooner even if it was just flying over to drop water and food. Four days is a long time to not have that kind of help.

I feel that the government has definitely let the people of New Orleans and other hurricane victims down. It's not like we didn't know that this was a problem. The government had just not been giving it the proper attention.
Maybe we can all use this as a learning experience on how not to prepare for a hurricane.

i'm from CT, and granted, the people in new orleans were given ample warning that a hurricane was coming, so was the government. i dont think ANYBODY had any idea that it would be as bad as it was, so there's really no point in bashing the people who didnt/couldnt leave, and i think the government should have had about a 24 hour grace period to get their act together.
the fact that its still pretty much a war zone down there is utterly unbelievable and i'm surprised more people arent outraged that this could happen in precious America. i'm not too surprised, but this really should be causing more of an uproar in my opinion. i dont know, maybe nancy grace is still harping on katrina, but if she is thats probably not helping the cause much.

The people were told to get out. The local and state governments failed to enact their emergency plans. The federal government's responsibility is limited and comes into play after a major disaster, not before. The state's own evacuation plan said NOT to place people in super-structures like the Superdome, because there would be no way to get them out or help them quickly. School buses to be used for evacuation were abandoned. My point is just that it's wrong to blame the federal government, including FEMA, this was a state and local govt. disaster.

im from the uk and this event showed the rest of the world that racism is alive and kicking in 2006.
we were shown pictures of people been left to die like dogs
we were told how the usa media lied in their coverage,
i bet if that happened in an area where whites are the majority, no way would they have been left without help

You can't count on the government for everything. Sometimes you have to depend on yourself. If you didn't get out, it's no body's fault but your own.
