I have been invited to spend a month in Peru with a friend when her husband leaves for Iraq.....I have no idea where her family is from in the region though. Another friend told me about Lima, it sounds incredibly beautiful. I just want to hear other peoples input and experiences before I look up the touristy stuff. And Yes, I will absolutely do whatever I have to see Machu Pichu and that other place I can't quite remember the name of.

I spent a month there a few years back. Went from Lima to Nazca and saw the lines in the desert from a Cessna. Then went to Arequipa which is also the name of a Peruvian beer. I spen the rest of the time mainly in cuzco which is a great place. Loads of ruins in and about Cuzco with of course Machu picchu.

The inca Trail is quite a bit more expensive than when I went but I recommend it:

You are so lucky to be spending a whole month in Peru! I was there a couple of weeks ago in Cusco, the ancient Inca Capital. I did the whole Machu Picchu thing three times in the past three years. Its a wonderful country with beautiful scenery and warm and friendly people. Just a word of caution though. As you would in any strange country, dont carry large sums of cash with you and dont wear valuable jewellery in public, just take the usual precautions and dont go anywhere alone at night. Taxis are pretty cheap so always arrange to be collected by taxi if you can. Other than that, you will have a ball when you go. I wish I was going back myself.
