I was on the injection for four years. My periods stopped straight away and i had nothing for the whole four years - after comin off about a month later i had a bright red period - which was very scary at the time. I remember the doctor tellin me that my periods would stop and that that was a completely normal symptom whilst on it. Some girls who say they hate periods say the best thing to do is go on the depo although it does have some side effects to some girls, eg weight gain although this didnt happen to me - quite the opposite!
I personally dont think you need the blood test unless you've bin havin problems whilst on it. You could go for it for peace of mind tho?
If bein on the injection for a long period of time would affect our fertility then we should get told about it. They dont say when they give u the first dose that after a certain amount of time you have to have a blood test!!
Its up to you - although speak to your doctor first if you can - get some advice that way.
Good Luck with it x

Hi, I was on on Depo for 7 years until about 7 months ago.I came off it because I had started feeling generally tired and listless all the time, had a blood test done and it came back that my oestrogen levels were very very low, so now I'm on the mini pill and I do feel alot better.I did'nt have periods on the injection either or any spotting.

I was on depo for 8 years and apparently medical opinion is you shouldn't have it for more than 5 years.

I came off it and tried implanon and currently on mirena.

I had no bleeding during the 8 years, however, between each type of contraception I have had normal periods.

Take the test you might as well know bit hopefully there is nothing to fret about.

I've been having Depo for 18 years, in between 4 children. The docs sent me to the hospital for a bone scan cos it can cause osteoparosis. All this time I've never seen periods and the docs are now advising me to come of it as I'm over 40 and more prone to Osteoparosis at my age. I don't know how I'm goin to cope with periods again, after such a long break.

You should come off the depo injection straight away before you do yurself any serious long term damage!

Did you know that Natural Family Planning is as effective as the pill and injections (i.e. over 99%), has no side effects and is immediately reversible when you decide that you do want kids?
