The flight to Australia are very reasonable. First look at the few airlines and check what they can offer in a way stopover.
In May I flew Singapore Airlines from Los Angeles to Singapore, there is a stop over of 6 hours which is a treat really because Changi Airport is so nice and lots of shops. They also have a free bus ride from Airport to City of Singapore with a tour guide.
But if you want to go there quickly, take QANTAS from San Francisco to Sydney non stop. The other interesting itenerary is United Airlines From San Francisco to Hawaii, I stopover there for 2 days then Hawaii to Sydney- its the best. The cost is around $1,000 - $1,200 return airfare depending on the season. Right now it is summer in Australia.

Ok well I looked up a one way ticket to Sydney, AU and it'll cost about $800, if you are leaving from San Fransisco Airport at 8:00 PM and you'll get there in about 19 hours with a stop in Auckland, New Zealand

I couldn't find what classes you want to take so here's the website to University of Australia in New Castle (which is maybe 1-2 hours outside Sydney.) and you can find information here!

God Bless. By the way. I'm moving to Sydney AU this coming up year. soo... Good luck!

Flight, from LAX to Sydney, depending which airlines, but I think there are not many direct flight except from Qantas and maybe United airlines. I know a friend of mine flew with Air New Zealand (stopover in Auckland for a couple of hours), quite reasonable, around 1300 USD return with all taxes. I know that Qantas is quite expensive, especially the direct flight ones.

Below prices are based on my experience, all in Australian dollar:
Accomodation, backpackers, around 30 dollars a night, dorm bed (Sydney is significantly more expensive than other cities in Australia), for a budget very basic single room, around 60 to 70. A more upscale one will cost you around 100 dollars or more a night.

Transportation, with public transport, maybe 10 to 15 dollars a day, going around the city. Meal, around 10 dollars, food court with drink, dinner, around 30 per head or more in a reasonable restaurant.

Total cost, prepare around 150 per day for accomodation, meal and transportation.

One week sydney, with flight from LAX, easily 2300 USD or more if you do side trip to Blue Mountain, and surrounding.
