semi's are in the left lane so they make it easier for cars merging onto the highway, the construction also usually leaves the left lane a little wider as well.
there are aslo several interstates around the country that require trucks to run in the left lane to equalize road wear

They aren't always supposed to be in the left lane, but when it's marked for them to be there, it's because there has been a lane shift created to the right and the pavement for the temporary lane isn't as strong as the regular pavement. What is the left lane in the construction zone was the right lane under normal conditions. If the trucks drove in the right lane of the construction zone, the pavement would be overloaded and break up very quickly.

I believe they use the left lane because sometimes a construction zone can last miles. If there are onramps in this area, it is usually surrounded by barrels as they come onto the highway which makes it harder to merge into traffic and with less time to do it. So by them travelling in the left lane makes it easier for the cars.

didnt know that,,,, it would seem to make sense to ask/require them to be in the lane away from the construction,,,,, so if its on side of road, left lane, if in the meridian the right lane,,,,just the wind from a semi might interfere with the work, much less the workers taking a chance to get hit by one

an emty semi will weigh in at about 55,000 pounds. i've seen flatbed's hauling steel plates that, the load alone weighed in at 56,000. 2,000 pounds to the ton; u do the math.
usually, i've seen construction zones blocked off with concrete barriers. but in any case, in a construction zone, all traffic has to be in the required lane, not just trucks.
