It depends on your definition of "affordable," but generally, I'd say YES.

CA community colleges are always cheapest. They range from $11 to $40 per unit, usually in the neighborhood of $20 per unit.

Cal State Universities are a little pricier at $2000-$3000 per semester. The University of California is elite and more expensive. A semester costs about $3000-$4000 now.

None of these costs includes books and living expenses, though. Still, I did 4 years at UC Berkeley for undergrad, and it cost me less than three semesters at University of Southern California for my masters.

A good compromise is to do your general ed requirements at a community college and transfer to the UC system. You save money, and you get your degree from one of the best schools in the US (UC schools generally rank quite high overall -- UC Berkeley is the #1 public university in the WORLD)

No matter where you live or how much you consider education as a cost versus product ratio, there is no better way to spend your money, than on education.

Without denying the HYPE of so many infomercials touting minor "colleges" or educational institutions, the quote "You reap what you sow" is as valid as any.

If for no other reason than to expand ones mind, concepts, possibilities, even in thought processes, Education will "PAY" back many times over, as opposed to any alternatives.
