It doesn't have stored tables. Instead, it literally calculates the answer via internal Boolean logic. For non algebraic functions such as trig functions, radicals, etc, it uses numeric approximation methods such as Newton's method. Early calculators were rather slow, you could see the display flicker as it did the internal calculations. Even with modern calculators there is a bit of a delay for calculations that involve lengthy approximations.
