wow, i applaud you for your dedication to education. try not to bog your brain down all at once. reading information and retaining it are two different things. when your preparing to learn something new take a few minutes and clear your Mind read slowly, highlighting the key points. and maybe even after reading make a page of all the key points and what you learned this will help you greatly. good luck and best wishes to you in your upcoming high school career. i just recently graduated high school in may and all throughout high school i had the same drive and did well. good luck

Set yourself an achievable time limit of concentrated study, then have a break. Why try to remember the the words read anyway? Identify KEY points / phrases. You can either take notes on these, or read them into a tape recorder. The advantage of the latter is that you can play the tape back and revise while you are doing something else.... your subconcious should help you retain the information.
Another trick is to note down ideas as a concept map (just search internet for examples) It also allows you to add other information read and make links you will remember.
Finally, enjoy your christmas break...having fun refreshes the mind and will help you concentrate when you do go back to your studies!

Hiya!
I know the feeling! What helped me was CGP books, they're not like giant books that go into huge detail. But for KS3 they're excellent and sumarise every part and important bits in greater detail. That should let you catch up a bit more!
When I was 14 i was slipping aswell but what really made me concentrate was just knowing that at the end of the day i was more capable and i should get better grades.
Another thing is revision cards. Take notes during class when their is an explanation then hole punch and tie them together at home, this will help you relate back to what was learnt in the lesson.
All the best x

Well, I did my Standard Grades just before summer, and I studyed using BBC Bitesize Videos, they are very boring, but they make a difference to reading, and you can learn a lot from them. Also try writing out summarys/key points from in your textbooks, thats aways a really good way coz it cuts out the crap that the textbooks are filled with and gives the actual stuff u need to know.

Well study in a place that is quiet as possible and get everything out of your head except what is in front of you.
If that doesn't help just put on some soft, relaxing music but if you don't want to meditate you don't have to. Just sit back and relax, push everything back from your mind

you're probably a kinesthetic learner - study more beneficial with the help of doing. both you study issues hands-on ... or you need to attempt options-mapping. appeals to a lot of newbies of diverse studying kinds. :)
