I found two products made commercially that are specifically designed to wash fruits and vegetables at home;

1) "Environné Fruit and Vegetable Wash", that's used to help remove pesticide, fungicide and herbicide residues, waxes and oils from our fruit and vegetables.

According to their website, the procuct will remove up to 97% of chemical residues.

2) "PRO-SAN L Fruit And Vegetable Wash" kills E. Coli 0157:H7 and 99.999% of bacteria on contact! It cleans and sanitizes produce and food contact surfaces: countertops, cutting board, dishes, and utensils."

The best thing to wash fruits and vegies is with 35% Food Grade Hydrogen Peroxide. I purchase mine by the case from http://www.h2o2oxytech.com but they do sell it in some health food stores. You can go to the referenced website and read about the possible uses. There are many good websites that tell of it's uses, you must be careful with it as it is highly concentrated.

You can use bleach but if you do.. make sure the concentration is MOSTLY water because I do not like the taste of bleach.. Here is what we used overseas.. in Africa and Asia (HIGHLY recommended by the Medical personnel there).. use plain dish soap(dawn, etc) in water.. wash the fruits in that and then rinse off with water. We would also take lettuce leaves and just dunk them in the soapy water and then rinse off.... HOWEVER.. with lettuce.. We used a very very light concentration of clorox and water and soaked the lettukce in that for a few minutes(30 or so) and then rinsed off.

Our grocery store has a spray-on product called FIIT. Pick it up in the fruit/veggie aisle. You spray it on fruits/veggies, then rinse.
