Sports cars have rear wheel drive and 2 doors, IMO, first of all.
Reliable and reasonable cost? I would recommend a Mazda Miata or a Toyota MR-2 of any generation. The Honda S2000 is also a great choice if it's in your price range.
If you want a sports car for handling, agility and real driving fun these are your best bets.
If you want more power and size and don't mind paying more for gasoline I recommend the Nissan Z or Toyota Supra.
The RX-8 is nice, but rotary engines are notorious for not lasting very long so I would hesitate to recommend an RX8. If you don't care about that and love rotarys, then I would recommend an FD RX-7 twin turbo over an RX8 any day anyway. Much nicer looking and lighter-weight car.
If you want a sports car for going fast in a straight line and don't care as much about handling and balance, there are a lot of quick cars out there that will be reliable. It just depends on how serious you are about the word "sports" in your sports car. Do you just want something sleek looking thats quick or do you want a car that is designed for really carving up a windy road?
If you are dead serious about the best driving for your dollar, you want, at minimum, RWD, a fully independent suspension, a manual transmission and a car with good weight balance and a well sorted suspension. Japanese is your best bet for low cost of ownership. Put it all together and you will see why I made the recommendations I did.
If you aren't quite as obsessed with sports car purity, then there are some very nice sedans and other quick cars out there. I would not recommend the Dodge Neon based upon its poor reliability and bad crash test safety, however in terms of pure acceleration for your money, I will concede it is probably the best deal out there. The Subaru WRX is a close second in speed for your money factor and has the added benefit of AWD, reliability and good crash safety. I am very comfortable recommending the WRX or WRX STI sedans.

Sports car huh? As for reliability, japanese is your best bet. As far as the sports part of it... rear or all wheel drive, because its tough to keep cv joints together when you put excess power to front wheel drive cars...... sooooo....... good luck

A Miata would be the right car. They are reasonably priced and bulletproof.

They are all relatively low maintenance as long as you do not try to push the performance envelope of the vehicle that is where problems start.
