Of the ones I've seen live, Rent is by far my favorite. It certainly isn't for everyone. The subject matter is very adult and some of the scenes are a little intense (especially when you consider that there's an exotic dancer and a drag queen in the play). But it's fabulous. If you get a chance, you should definitely see the current tour cast (especially before Declan and Harley leave... they're so awesome, and it's such a change to hear Declan's accent).
Phantom is awesome, too. I loved it when I saw it a few years back. They build a false proscenium arch with cherubs and flowers on it that conceals a catwalk. Plus, they raise the chandelier out over the audience and guide it onto the stage with a guy (sp?) wire. And the staircase is HUGE!!! It's definitely an FX-driven show, but that's part of what makes it so fabulous. The lake scenes look so real, you feel like you're really watching them glide across water. I read an article about how they did all of the stuff before I saw the show, but I never saw a single wire or anything.
Also, I've heard Aida is pretty good. I'm going to see it in March, hopefully.

WOW! There is so many good plays that you can see. But first, I highly suggest Phantom of the Opera. It is one the the most seen and the longest running show in Broadway history. But, it all really depends on what you like. I would suggest looking it up on a website to see if you would be interested in it.

Definitely see Phantom of the Opera!!! It is my ALL TIME FAV!!!!
Be sure to have a decent seat so you can tell what is going on throughout the show. There is soooo much involved and you don't want to miss a thing. You really get pulled into the characters and what they're feeling.
Have FUN!!!!

I was blown away and had an awesome time at Momma Mia. A must see. I find knowing the words and music before hands makes it even better. All time favorites of mine, West Side Story, Chorus Line and I love both the music and original choreograpy of "Evita"!!! And all the others listed by other folks here are great.
ENJOY!!!!

I really enjoyed Urinetown The Musical. Seriously.
It's got catchy music, cheeky charaters, well, a bit of a political message.
Sadly, it seems it's not touring right now, and the Chicago production closed.
If you really like musicals, just see as many as you can. Even local community groups, high schools and colleges can put on great shows.
