He retired much earlier then the 50's......he was slowing down due to his health and of course his age....he played I believe close to 20 years.....he died fairly young at the age of 53 from throat cancer....by far the greatest hitter of all time.....Hank Aaron batted close to 4000(!!!that's 4000 not 400)...more times then Ruth....at Ruth's pace he would have hit 1100 + home runs with those extra turns at bat....also remember that he started out as a pitcher.....held the consecutive scoreless pitched innings until Whitey Ford broke it......hell of a baseball player!!!......and a "prolific" hot eater from what I read......maybe he could have challenged the current champ in eating "dogs"!!!

Ah, it would have been hard for him to retire in the 1950's since he died in 1948.
He retired as a player in May 1935. His last year with the Yankees was in 1934, and had significant performance drops that year. He also was not in good shape and had lost nearly all of his agility and speed by then.
He and especially his wife had made demands that he become a major league manager. He then signed a contract as combination player/executive with the Boston Braves in 1935. Ruth was enticed to sign the contract under false pretenses by Braves owner Judge Emil Fuchs. While giving false promises to Ruth about running the club, Fuchs was actually trying to get Ruth to buy the club, yet keep Fuchs in charge of it. Fuchs kept his manager, Bill McKechnie, on the job.
The team turned out to be horrible. McKechnie, a futher Hall of Fame manager, was a defensive based manager. He and Ruth did not get along at all. After Fuchs refused to fire McKechnie, and not give Ruth any authority, Ruth up and quit the team.
At the end of the year Fuchs went bankrupt and lost the team, and McKechnie went to manage the Cincinnati Reds, in which he won a World Series in 1940.

TO THE PSEUDO MICKEY MANTLE - THAT IS WHY IT IS CALLED CAREER RECORDS. WHEN YOU BRAKE A RECORD IT DOESN'T MATTER IF YOU PLAYED MORE GAMES THAN THE PREVIOUS RECORD HOLDER.
