it's not just the guitar's individual sound u are looking for. Sometimes the studio has special sound effects equipment to improve song quality. Example: MIDI sound systems that connect to the amplifiers to give a "heavier" distortion.
personally i'd get a Kramer or Fender Stratocaster

Kirk Hammet used an ESP guitar. But for his sound, be aware that he also had a certain setup on his amp to give him the dynamic sound that you hear on those cd's.
