The Berlin Wall divided US/UK West Germany from USSR East Germany. The Soviets erected a wall to prevent the "brain drain," or prevent all of their citizens from crossing over to West Germany and claiming political asylum. After the fall of the Berlin Wall on 9 November 1989, Germany was reunited and the communism failed, in Russia at least.

The Berlin Wall simply separated East and West Berlin. Following WW2 Germany was split in two however Berlin was to be controlled under the four powers, USA, Britain, France and USSR. The USSR made an attempt to take control of the whole of Berlin by blockading all of it from the West. Berlin was deep inside the East German area of control following WW2, the blockade was an attempt the close the road from west Germany to Berlin which was effectively a corridor in Eastern Germany, the blockade was broken by airlifting supplies into Berlin. The USSR then took total control of the East of Berlin thus setting up the Berlin Wall. West Germany still had a coastline, with Hamburg being the main port.

The Berlin Wall was built to keep the East Germans from going to the west. Berlin was divided by the Allied powers after the Second World War. The U.S., France, Great Britain and the (then) Soviet Union each had sectors, and, East Germany was the Soviet sector.
When the wall came down in 1989, Germany was reunited, putting a considerable economic strain on the newly enlarged nation. More importantly, families were reunited and people who had tried to flee communist East Germany were no longer shot trying to hurdle the wall or caught trying to tunnel under it (and subsequently punished).
The wall coming down signaled the demise of communist control and influence of the eastern bloc countries. It marked the reunification of Europe.

Berlin was occupied partially by the Russians and partially by the Westerns Allies. People were running away from the Eastern (Russian controlled) part. In order tp prevent it, the Russian built the Wall.
The Berlin Wall was erected in the night of August 13, 1961.
It was a weekend and most Berliners slept while the East German government begun to close the border. In the early morning of that Sunday most of the first work was done: the border to West Berlin was closed. The East German troups had begun to tear up streets and to install barbed wire entanglement and fences through Berlin.
The first concrete elements and large square blocks were used first on August 15, 1961. Within the next months the first generation of the Berlin Wall was build up: a wall consisting of concrete elements and square blocks.
A second Wall was build in June 1962 in order to prevent from escaping to the West.
The first Wall was improved during the next years and it's difficult to distinguish between the first and the second generation of the Wall.
These two first generations were removed by the third generation beginning about 1965. The third generation of Wall consisted of concrete slabs between steel girder and concrete posts with a concrete sewage pipe on top of the Wall.
From the year 1975 the third generation of Wall was replaced by the fourth generation. New concrete segements were used which were easy to build up and were more resistant to breakthroughs and to environmental polutions

The Berlin wall, similar to any wall was to create a huge gated community.
The German leaders planned the wall to keep the "riff raff" out of their beloved country.
