Good question! It is an abbreviation.

Before electricity, the dark was the best time for long conversations to take place - as work outside had ceased, and that was the time to converse socially, eat supper, read (maybe), and go to bed so you could be up before the chickens.

Said (while it was light) - It was come over "after it is dark".

Then "after it's dark"

Finally "after dark".

That's one way to look at it never thought of it like that. I think its easier to say after dark than after daylight ends

i think its called after dark b/c at first your eyes haven't adjusted yet...and it is really dark. but when they adjust, it isnt so dark...
