Difficult. All the great football managers post-war had a background in the mines or armed forces. How would they cope with the mobile phone in dressing room generation? Also the greats of today were managed by that generation. As a Scot I would have to say Sir Alex Ferguson. At Aberdeen he overturned a state of mind that says the Old Firm win everything though he was well removed from the Scottish media then moved to Old Trafford and was successful in a place where there is a Sky satellite parked over the Stretford End. Then there's Clough and Revie. When is the next time the League will be won by a team outside London, Liverpool or Manchester?

I think it's a choice of 2.
Herbert Chapman built 2 teams who won the football league 3 times in succession, Huddersfield and Arsenal. (Without the stupid amount of money Mourinho chucks around) No-one else has done this with 2 different teams (although he was not manager throughout Huddersfield's reign - he only started it)
Brian Clough. Took TWO teams out of Division 2 to win the first division title and won 2 European Cups with the second one. This feat has no parallel and makes him, by any objective judgement, almost certainly the best
Jose Mourinho proves nothing by spending millions more than everyone else so is not even a contender. Alex Ferguson, Jock Stein, Busby, Shankly, Wenger and Paisley can all stake reasonable claims, especially Ferguson who was a big success with Aberdeen prior to his Manu fame.
(This is an objective opinion - I have never been a fan of any of the above teams)

Considering Football managers come and go as quick I think you should look at the ones that have managed to remain at a football club for a substantial period of time. There are great names out there like Bill Shankley, Matt Busby and Sir Alex Fergurson but check out lower league Club Crewe Alexandra, their manager Dario Gradi - he is the longest serving manager in the Football League - although Crewe have not amounted masses of trophies he obviously does something right or he would have gone by now.

I'm an Arsenal fan, but i have to say Alex Ferguson is probably the best manager. For 20 years he's been pointing Man U in the right direction and lets not forget he also won titles with Aberdeen in Scotland. After he left Aberdeen, well, nobody heard of them.

Alex Ferguson....he started Man-u when they were in the lows.
and look what he has done to them.... he made them one of THE best teams in the world, and he still manages them!!!
Lets see if Mourinho can do what Ferguson has for done Man-u.
Lets see if Mourinho can win without Abramovich's money.
Lets see how long Mourinho can last for Chelsea.
Don't get me wrong i belive Mourinho is one of the best mangers in the world.
But can he really achieve what Ferguson has done?

Between Shankly, Paisley, Ferguson, Stein and Clough. My personal favourite is Clough cos he was the most entertaining and his sheer arrognace was fascinating. Though i think Paisley was the most successful
