LOL! You won't eat rover, will you? Anyway, you sacrifice turkeys on thanksgiving, after your kids play with them. I suppose the idea is the same.
As for chickens, they are edible, but they are not animals. Animals which are generally sacrificed include sheep. lambs, goats, cows and also camels. A cow can be collectively sacrificed by 7 persons. A camel also has multiple sacrifices, although I have never eaten one! I once heard that in Maldives, they sacrifice several chickens, as there are no animals there. I wonder if anyone can tell me more about that. Happy Eid!

Generally,1/3 is given to the poor, 1/3 to friends and neighbours and the remaining third is kept for once own consumption.
