LOL! You won't eat rover, will you? Anyway, you sacrifice turkeys on thanksgiving, after your kids play with them. I suppose the idea is the same.
As for chickens, they are edible, but they are not animals. Animals which are generally sacrificed include sheep. lambs, goats, cows and also camels. A cow can be collectively sacrificed by 7 persons. A camel also has multiple sacrifices, although I have never eaten one! I once heard that in Maldives, they sacrifice several chickens, as there are no animals there. I wonder if anyone can tell me more about that. Happy Eid!

Generally,1/3 is given to the poor, 1/3 to friends and neighbours and the remaining third is kept for once own consumption.

I am thinking that this year I will sacrifice the family dog. Usually it is not a pet but this is a special year of sacrifice for Eidul Azha so it will be Rover. Of course this will not sit well with the little ones but they must understand the importance of sacrifice and this should well serve the purpose.
