A person is "laid off" rather than "fired" precisely because the person did nothing wrong.

Layoff means that the employer doesn't have enough work for the person to do (low student attendance in this case).

You will be entitled to receive unemployment compensation while you look for another job.

In Florida, you'd find information about the support that Florida offers plus the location of your local employment office at the Florida Agency for Workforce Innovation - http://www.floridajobs.org/

I believe that, in general, school student population is trending down somewhat. So there may be reduced demand for teacher assistants in the future. (But I could be wrong about that.)

You can look for another teacher assistant job in another school or school district, or you can speak with your counselor at your state Employment Office to see if you qualify for some training to help you find a new career.

If you are in the U.S. but not in Florida, you'll find your state's Employment Office listed here - http://www.job-hunt.org/state_unemployment_offices.shtml

Register for unemployment compensation immediately! Don't wait until you "need help." They also have job postings and other services to help you find another job.

Good luck!

It's just the way the world works. Most contracts attest that work can be terminated at any time for any reason, in this case it wasn't your fault, but people were not there, and their financial issues caused them to have to let people go
